Seven ways to avoid pet germs

Reduces your chances of getting sick from your pets by taking these simple precautions:

1. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, handing washing is the most important means of preventing the spread of infecion. After a dog walk , wash you hands with hot water and antibacterial soap. Learn how to best wash your hands here.

2. Wear gloves when cleaning the litter box.
Toxoplasmosis is an infection caused by a parasite that may be carried in cat feces. Humans may become infected with this parasite through incidental ingestion of cat feces, which can happen by touching their hand to their mouth after cleaning the litter box and before washing their hands. However, pregnant or nursing women, and those individuals with compromised immune systems are at increased risk and should avoid cleaning or changing the litter box whenever possible. If these individuals must clean or change the litter box, we strongly advise that they wear gloves and thoroughly wash their hands with soap and water after completing the chore.

3. Avoid sleeping in bed with your dog or cat.
In fact, a study by Dr. Kate Stenske, a clinical assistant professor at Kansas State's College of Veterinary Medicine, found that dog owners who sleep with their pets or allow them to lick their face are no more likely to be exposed to E. coli from their pet than pet owners who banish their dogs to the floor. But while disease-causing germs are not a big concern, odors and dirt in general are. Moreover, a Mayo Clinic study reports that owners who sleep with their dogs do not have a restful night sleep. Purchase a pet bed to have a healthier night's sleep.

4. You might love your pet, but don't kiss him on the mouth.
Dog mouths are teeming with germs like salmonella, campylobacter, and cryptosporidium. These germs get into a dog's mouth from eating spoiled food from the street or when he uses his tongue as toilet paper. Moreover, a canine kiss carries these germs from pooch to person.

5. Discourage your pet from snuzzling or licking family members face and/or hands.
It is well known that diseases can be shared between dogs and people - about 75% of emerging diseases are zoonotic, meaning they are transferable between humans and other animals. Ringworm spores can lurk on a dog's coat or muzzle. Every year, an estimated two million cases are reported of the transmission of ringworm from pets to people. To prevent ringworm, one of the most common infections dogs pass to people, wash up after a session of heavy pettting.

6. Discourage your cat from jumping up and walking on your kitchen counters.
Helicobacter pylori, an organism found in cats, can cause gastric ulcers in humans. It has been suggested that it may be transmitted to humans if a cat walks across a food preparation area which is then not disinfected before food is next prepared on it. Simple hygiene, including keeping cats off of counters, is recommended though it isn't known what percentage of cats carry helicobacter.

7. Stop pets from drinking out the toilet.
Bathrooms and especially toilets are havens for germs, bacteria and viruses to gather. To neutralize the germs, bacteria and viruses, the majority of cleansers we use contain toxic chemicals which can cause a variety of health problems for your pet if ingested. To avoid pet health problems, keep toilet lids down.

A recent Ladies Home Journal,article, entitled "The Best Way to Feed Your Dog," discussed the when and the what to feed your dog. Additonally, the article mentioned dog allergies, sneaking your pet food, bad breathe homemade diets. After reading this article, I was very disappointed that the author failed to mentioned how to read a dog food label and what are the best food dog food bowls.

To find the best bowl for yo and your pet, consider the below listed factors.

Plastic dog bowls are relatively inexpensive, generally dishwasher-safe and unbreakable. They also come in a variety of sizes, shapes and colors. Although convenient, plastic bowls can be chewed and/or scratched by your dog, leaving hiding places for bacteria. Moreover, some dogs can develop an allergic reaction which looks like dirt spot or smear on the chin or face from the plastic.

Ceramic bowls can be mass produced or found in an artisan shop or website. Today, they are most created to enhance your kitchen decor. As a cautionary note, check ceramic bowls on a regular basis for chipping and cracking. Whereas bacteria can easily become lodged in the grooves and contaminate a pet’s meal, a chipped or cracked feeding bowl can also be a cutting hazard to a dog’s face.

Stainless steel dog bowls are durable, dishwasher-safe and be purchased for as little ast $1.99 at kitchen supply stores.

Specifically, for a puppy, choose an appropriate bowl for her size. For an adult or senior dog, use larger, raised bowls so she does not have to bend and stretch her neck. And for a dog with a flat face, such as a Boston Terrier, Lhaso Apso, Pekingese, Pug, or Shih Tzuh, choose a shallow bowl, so that if she is eating wet food, she does not put her whole head in the bowl and stain her fur. For a dog with long ears, like a Springer Spaniel or Beagle, use a deep, narrow bowl to prevent dirty and food-stained ears.

Better late than never! I just received the new book of author Maureen Sullivan and illustrator Alison Joseph in the mail. In three beautiful illustrated books for children of all ages, the dynamic duo describe the adventures of French Bulldog, Carlos-the granddog of Sullivan. The best part is that diehard New Yorkers, Sullivan and Joseph use the Big Apple for all of Carlos's adventures. As a special treat, I am going to read it with my four English Toy Spaniels before going to bed.

January is National Organization Month. Getting organized is helpful for having a pet. An organizational strategy can help you monitor pet health, care for pet gear and save money.

1. Pet food
Keep your pet's food fresh and your refrigerator odor-free by storing opened cans of pet food inside a plastic container with a lid. Save money by recycling plastic soup containers from the local Chinese restaurant. For dog food bags, use bag clips ($9.99) or transfer bag to a storage container with a seal tight lid.

2. Storing pet's gear
For less than $20, dog owners can purchase a canvas, shoe pocket organizer to store their pet's gear. Put leashes, doggie bags and other canine stuff in the pockets. An organizer can hang on the back of an apartment door or on the inside of a closet door.

It wasn't Uno

Frankly, like many serious dog enthusiasts, I am tired of seeing Uno (the 2008 Best in Show Winner of the Westminster Kennel Club). He just seems to be taken out and shown just everywhere. Don't get me wrong he is a lovely dog. While I found him delightful when he won the coveted title 2 years ago, I am looking forward to seeing what dog will reign supreme this upcoming year.

While I have heard the praises of Uno over and over again, I must admit that I find it extremely ironic that it is a pack of beagles that is terrorizing the North Folk of Island. It seems that disatisfied hunters ditched dogs because they were not performing well in the field. As a result of their desperation, these dogs have become a crazed pack, chasing Orient Point residents and their pets home, even baying, jumping on their residents' doors to be let in and eventually, breaking them from persistence.

It certainly is not surprising since these dogs are starving, ferocious, cold, hungry and desperate after being abandoned by hunters. Think of Dan Ackroyd's character, Louis Winthrope III in Trading Places. Out of desperation, he performed he drank, pointed a gun and stole because he was hungry and cold. All because of the irresponsible acts of other human beings-just like these dogs.

According to Calverton's Kent Animal Shelter Pam Green, five dogs have been picked up on the North Fork so far this hunting season. She expects to see more when the season ends in a month.

As a result, animal activists are trying to help by publicizing the plight of the wild beagles and trying to find homes for them. Two shelters now have five former feral beagles up for adoption between them. And they said that with love and care these abandoned hounds can become loving pets once again.

A View from Veranda

In December, I took advantage of offer to subscribe to various Hearst publications for the sale price of $5.00 each. I must have bought at least 10 magazines in hopes of spotting new trends of which I can apply to my work as a pet trend expert. One of the first magazines that I received was Veranda, a lovely home décor and decorating magazine.

While perusing through the March issue, I spotted a few dogs (Lab Mix, black Labrador retriever, Labradoodle, Golden Doodle, Italian greyhound and and calico, Domestic Short-Hair cat photographed within the home spreads. Moreover, I was happy to read Lisa Newsome's Editor’s Note in which she acknowledges that there were a number of pictures of animals featured in this issue. She wrote that “Pets bring such joy to our lives with their energy, intelligence and loyalty. Even so, they are not for everyone.”

Obviously from her comment, Lisa is a pet lover and I appreciate that she also recognizes that pets are not for everyone, especially those who want to keep a beautiful homes. Let’s face it they commit faux pas. They potty or vomit on the rug and unexpected places. They shed and can cause our friends and family to have allergic reactions. They can even get on our nerves.

However, they are superb companions. And as a result, I don’t mind buying an expensive vacuum that will collect all the pet hair and taking the time to decorate my home with them in mind.

My Dogs Are So Smart and You Probably Say the Same Thing Too.

My mother used to say that her children were brillanteens. I really don't know where she got that expression from but it obviously started when we were in our teens. I guess it was her way of telling us and her friends that we were smart, smart asses. Even now, I say tell my dogs, "Mommy, knows you are just brillant." Moreover, my dogs are not only brillant, they are beautiful, and of course, can do no wrong. I am secretly adore the fact that they are snobby. Although I do feel bad that they are snooby to their friend Little Z who barks for them to play with her but they just ignore her and pretend that she is invisible. Poor Little Z. She is Westie and can't help barking herself to death.

But I read this story today. After reading it, I realized the dog belonged to the reporter's wife. Tell me what you think? Just curious if I read it right.

Waiting for My Blue Book

Today, The Blue Book, was shipped to New York City for distribution. The magazine named for the Metropolitan Dog club’s colors, celebrates the Big Apple as the home of about 1.5 million dogs. The Blue Book was my brain child and I am the Editor and Chief.

My inspiration for the magazine came from my varied experiences in the dog world. Moreover, it was in the 1990s that I started to seriously contemplate the animal-human bond. My observations began as a student at the New York School of Dog Grooming. Night after night, dog owners would come from the five boroughs with their mixed, purebred, exotic and guide dogs for the students to groom. Concerned dog owners would drop off their dogs for a dose of beauty and good health. Upon their return, worry would instantly fade into a smile as they saw their dogs emerge from the grooming area. At the moment each dog and owner physically greeted each other, I saw the special relationship that existed between the two of them.

After all these years, I still appreciate observing the relationship between dogs and their owners. As I walk around my Little Italy neighborhood with my four English Toy Spaniels, I hope that some dog-loving tourists and area residents see the unique bond I share with my dogs and just don’t assume at that I am their kindly dog walker.

Cat Focus Group: Home Alone and Having Fun

Friskies, the leading cat food brand, conducted a study to reveal the magical world of cats. In this cat “focus group,” 50 cat owners and their cats participate in an experiment to examine the feline, sensory experiences in cats' home environments when their owners are not around. Cats from around the nation wore tiny digital cat-cams that took pictures of their surroundings every 15 minutes. The resulting photographs uncovered where cats go and what they do, specifically, when they are left home alone.

It seems that average cat is home alone nearly five hours per day which is a lot of time for cats to play and explore their home environment. Furthermore, the study revealed not only what cats do, but also how they view and experience the world around them when they’re home alone.

Purina® animal behavior scientist Jill Villarreal, Ph.D., analyzed the photos from the Friskies® cats. She noted that the photgraphs shed light from a cat’s point-of-view and, for the first time, we can better understand what gets our cats’ attention and provides them with opportunities for play and adventure when they are alone.

According to the Friskies survey of cat owners, almost half of all owners say they wonder what their cat is doing when they are not home. The survey also revealed that 71 percent of owners suspect their cat is sleeping; 52 percent think they are eating; and 47 percent think they looking out the window. More, interesting details include:

· Several cats took pictures of computer and television screens. This is likely due to the cat’s natural prey instinct to focus in on moving objects.

· The cats’ photos revealed that screened-in porches are a rich oasis filled with sensory stimulation. This includes sights, sounds, textures, and smells with grassy patches and non-toxic plants that provide tactile (touch) and olfactory (smell) stimulation for the cats.

· The photos also showed that cats were greatly interested in water, be it in the sink, bathtub, or swimming pool. This may seem counterintuitive, as it is commonly believed that cats dislike water. However, these photos reveal that cats like water, but on their own terms. For example, the coolness of the sink and tub provide a fun thermal contrast for cats.

The results of this first-of-its-kind Friskies focus group are highlighted in the Scratchington Post, an online report showcasing the daily lives of America’s cats. The report includes findings from the Cat Sense survey of cat owners; photos from the cat “repurrters’ with analysis from Dr. Villarreal; background on each repurrter; and tips on how to help cats live life to the fullest by providing them with rich sensory experiences.

Pet Travel Survey Reveals How Pet Owners and Non-Pet Owners Feel

As many of you know, I have travelled all over the country with my dogs, cats and birds. And when lecturing, I always tell folks that not every pet is right for travel and not every trip is right for pets. But, if you take the time to plan accordingly, you and your family can have great times whether you fly or take a road trip.

When planning a trip, I always encourage pet owners to take advantage of their AAA membership because AAA is a valuable resource for pet owners who want to travel with their pets. Moreover, Traveling with Your Pet: The AAA PetBook is a valuable resource than be purchased from AAA for $12.98 for members; $21.67 for non-members.

Recently, AAA and Best Western, the world’s largest hotel chain, recently conducted a survey on traveling with your pet. The survey revealed that more than three-quarters of traveling pet owners would take Fido or Fifi on every vacation if they could, although more than half report difficulty finding pet-friendly accommodations. According to the recent survey some othger interesting information was discovered.

-Nearly one-third (28 percent) of those who travel with pets indicate they would rather travel with their pet than with their significant other
-More than half of traveling pet owners report difficulty finding pet-friendly accommodations
-Thirty-five percent of pet-owning respondents admitted to sneaking their pet into a hotel or motel in the past
-The top five frustrations respondents have with others who travel with pets are those who do not clean up after them (77 percent); those whose dogs constantly bark (53 percent); those who do not notify others their dog is aggressive (45 percent); not walking pets on a leash (42 percent); and owners whose pets are not trained to relieve themselves outside (30 percent).
-The most popular pet-inclusive vacations are visiting friends/family (73 percent) and road trips (56 percent)

Careless Dog Walker Cause Chaos

An officer, exercising the horses in a paddock at the Park Police stable in the Southeast Washington recreation area, was met upon by an unruly collection of dogs of various breeds. The dogs barked and snarled beyond the paddock fence and the officer began leading the horses to the safety of the stable. Because of the dog's behavior, the officer feared that the dogs might squirm under the fence and follow so he fired one or two shots into the ground. At that point, the dogs skedaddled.

With the horses safely inside, Schlosser said, the officer found the canines a short distance away, gathered around a woman who turned out to be a dog walker without leashes.

I wonder if this is dog walker is bonded, insured and a member of NAPPS or Pet Sitters International.

Pet K9 with Cancer Help Humans

According to scientists at the National Cancer Institute (NCI), studying pet dogs with cancer could yield valuable information on how to diagnose and treat human cancers. Estimates suggest that as many as 1 million new diagnoses of cancer occur in dogs in the United States each year. The condition is treated much like human cancer, with surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy.

The team of scientists, led by Chand Khanna, believes that studying these new therapies in clinical trials with dogs may yield insights into how to improve care for human patients. For example, naturally occurring tumors in dogs have clinical and biological similarities to the human disease. Dr. Khana notes that these trials are designed with the care of the animals as priority, and also that there's an informed consent process each time new procedures are done.

Moreover, Khanna and colleagues say that a pet owner's decision to pursue an experimental therapy is influenced by a number of factors, including the possible risks and benefits of the new therapy as well as the reduced costs for care provided by the trial. Additionally, many pet owners are motivated by the opportunity to contribute to the advancement of cancer treatment for future human and canine patients.

AKC Grant for Support and Maintenance of AKC CAR LSU-SVM Veterinary Mobile Unit

In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, AKC CAR donated $100,000 to the veterinary school toward the purchase of the AKC CAR LSU-SVM Veterinary Mobile Unit which consists of a truck and trailer. The trailer is equipped with facilities for medical and surgical procedures that can be deployed during natural disasters. Most recently the unit was utilized during hurricanes Gustav and Ike in September 2008 when it helped local veterinarians of Houma, LA care for the animals of their community after the storm. Working with the Louisiana State Animal Response Team (LSART), the unit was taken to where it was most needed after the storm.

Recently, AKC Companion Animal Recovery (AKC CAR) awarded a $22,940 Canine Support and Relief Fund grant to Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine (LSU-SVM) for the continued support, operation and maintenance of the AKC CAR LSU-SVM Veterinary Mobile Unit. AKC CAR’s recent grant will provide for an additional year of operation for the unit, which is used for teaching veterinary students and community service when not responding to disasters. Grant monies will be used to pay for gasoline for transportation to and from disaster locations, maintenance of the truck which tows the trailer, and to stock the trailer with medical and surgical supplies.

The mobile unit is used at six shelters in this area that have no veterinarian on staff to spay/neuter animals. Additionally, it provides veterinary students with a valuable teaching tool and public service to shelters in need of spay and neuter surgeries for adoptable pets.

People for Pets contacted me for expert advice for their latest 'Petiquette Dilemma: How do you handle the owners of a neighborhood dog who always ends up in your yard?

Miss Fido Manners: The rules of canine etiquette extend far beyond the home and out into the neighborhood and community. Dog owners must recognize that their behavior, and that of their pet affects their neighbors -in this case, you- whether they live in a house, a condo or apartment. If the dog-owning public practices consideration and promotes cordial relations, they can be an exemplary neighbors. And you can too, without creating neighbor-to-neighbor conflict.

While Miss Fido understands that your neighbor's dog frequenting your yard is troublesome, you do not detail what he does on premises? Does the dog use your lawn as potty area, get into your garbage cans or scratch at your door because he is in love with your pooch? I ask because it is always better to discuss specific concerns in your communication. Remember, your relationship with her dictates how best to approach her. For example, if you are friendly, go see her; If not, address a friendly note to her on your best stationary. Either way, you should express the problem succinctly, offer a solution to show concern for her and the dog. By doing this, you show you care about the dog and your relationship.

Tell her that at least two or three times a week, you find her pooch in her yard doing what. Remind her that you understand taht dogs can be Harry Houdini escape artists or canine high jumpers. Give her the benefit of the doubt that she doesn't know that he is cavorting around your property because there is a chance that a member of her household is letting the dog out and/or she does not know that her fencing is in need of repair. Ask her to take care of the problem as soon as possible by possible repairing or installing a pet fence. And lastly, mention that a roaming dog could get hit by a car, snatched by dog fighters or others with bad intentions, become ill from eating garbage or plants, or be picked up by animal control. More importantly, tell her that you wouldn't want her to neither worry about her family member nor incur additional expensive on his behalf.

Moreover, always try to maintain a cordial relationship with your neighbors because there is a chance that you may be living next to them longer than the life of your dog!

ITALIAN DOG BREEDS SAY ‘CIAO’ TO NEW YORK CITY IN THE COLUMBUS DAY PARADE

It would have never happened on Melrose Place

Melrose Place actress Brooke Burns and her 9-year-old daughter Madison are upset over the disappearance of their black maltipoo, Max. The 3-year-old dog ran out a door that had been left open by some painters. According to Burns's rep, a neighbor near Burns' Toluca Lake, Calif., home spotted a couple pick up the dog. It has been reported that the dog was not wearing any tags.

I am going to give Ms. Burns the similar advice I gave to Ms. Hilton when her ChiChi, Tinkerbelle, had gone missing in 2004:

1. Make a flyer. Use 8 X 11 fluorescent paper for higher visibility. Use a recent picture of your pet to make it easier for someone to spot her. List the date and place your dog was lost, breed, sex, age, weight, color, markings and a contact number. (Never give out all the identifying features so that if someone claims to have found your pet , they will be able to convince you by providing you with a full description.) Offer a reward. Post flyers at eye level on utility poles within a one mile radius from your home. Also, place them at veterinary offices, pet shops, grocery stores, grooming shops and neighborhood restaurants and local businesses. Frequently replenish flyer supplies at these locations.

2. Walk the neighborhood. Take turns with family members and walk around the neighborhood during day and night hours. Carry a flashlight to check in dark places. Also, bring your pet's favorite squeaky toy and dog treats. Call her name and make familiar sounds that she regularly hears. It is important to stop often, be quiet and listen for your pet's reply.

3. Tell your neighbors and those working in your neighborhood. Go from house to house and introduce yourself. Explain that your dog is missing. Tell neighborhood staff (housekeepers, guards, caretakers, gardeners) and municipal workers (postal carriers, garbage pick-up crews, police officers). Give them a flyer so that they can help you find your dog.

4. Visit your local animal control, humane societies, animal shelters. Control agencies usually keep an animal for only three (3) days. Visit these organizations by taking turns with family, friends and others. Leave flyers so that they can look for your pet too!

5. Find out if your pet has been killed on the road. Call the city, county and state department of transportation to see if you pet may have been killed on the road. Dogs are generally picked up every 24 hours.

6. Beware! Never wander around the neighborhood alone looking for your pet. Also, be cautious if some calls claiming to have your pet. Have them meet you with a family member or friend at a public location.

Tips for Senior Dogs

According to ASPCA's Stephen Zawistowki, there is approximately 13 million senior dogs (10 and older) and 12 million senior cats (10 and older) in the United States.

Whether you have a senior pet or puppy or kitten, the doctor provides some tips to make their lives longer, healtheir and more comfortable.
— Don’t overfeed your dog or cat.
— For puppies, slim is in.
— Teach your pooch hand signals for commands such as sit, down and come when he is young. If he loses his hearing at any age, you’ll still be able to communicate with him.
— Keep your dog or cat active throughout life. Maintaining muscle strength keeps them comfortable with dog pet and more mobile with walks and playtime
— Take the time for regular brushing and veterinary cleanings to infections that can negatively affect internal organs such as the heart and kidneys.
— Schedule 2x a year veterinary visits for your older pet so you can catch and treat problems before they become serious.
— Don’t ignore lumps and bumps in older pets. Cancer is often highly treatable, if it’s discovered early.
— If your pet’s vision is impaired, don't move the furniture around.
— If necessary, ask your veterinarian about medication to treat arthritis pain in cats and dogs.
—Lastly, don't forget to give your pet lots of love and attention.

According to a 1997 study done by the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) and Northeastern University, animal abusers are five times more likely to commit violent crimes against people and four times more likely to commit property crimes than are individuals without a history of animal abuse.

Many studies in psychology, sociology, and criminology during the last 25 years have demonstrated that violent offenders frequently have childhood and adolescent histories of serious and repeated animal cruelty. The FBI has recognized the connection since the 1970s, when its analysis of the lives of serial killers suggested that most had killed or tortured animals as children. Other research has shown consistent patterns of animal cruelty among perpetrators of more common forms of violence, including child abuse, spouse abuse, and elder abuse. In fact, the American Psychiatric Association considers animal cruelty one of the diagnostic criteria of conduct disorder.

Virtually every serious violent offender has a history of animal abuse in their past, and since there's no way to know which animal abuser is going to continue on to commit violent human crimes, they should ALL be taken that seriously. FBI Supervisory Special Agent Allen Brantley was quoted as saying "Animal cruelty... is not a harmless venting of emotion in a healthy individual; this is a warning sign..." It should be looked at as exactly that. Its a clear indicator of psychological issues that can and often DO lead to more violent human crimes.

Does this mean that Tyler Weinman, the Florida teenager accused of mutilating and killing 19 cats in two South Florida towns, Cutler Bay and Palmetto Bay, has a set future?

On Sunday, he was charged with 19 counts each of animal cruelty and improperly disposing of an animal body. Tyler Weinman, 18, also faces burglary charges in relation to four of the cats' deaths.

Authorities have been searching for the responsible person or persons since shortly after the killings began in April.

While detained, Tyler Weinman, offered to tell police "about one or two cats" if they would drop other charges, according to court documents released this week. The documents, which include a further transcript from an interview Weinman gave police shortly before he was arrested in June, appear to show the 18-year-old on the verge of a partial confession.

But the interview stopped before a possible confession could happen, the Miami Herald reports, when Weinman said he wanted a lawyer involved in the proceedings. David Macey, the attorney representing Weinman, disputes the accuracy of his client's statements as recorded in the documents. Calling them "either misleading [and/or] false," Macey cast aspersions on the investigation, which "with its unlimited resources" failed to include a tape recording of the interview.

Macey maintains Weinman is innocent of the charges against him, which include animal cruelty and improperly disposing of an animal body for each of 19 cat killings and an additional four counts of burglary related to the crimes.

Thus far in the investigation, only circumstantial evidence seems to connect Weinman to the killings. The crimes took place in the two Florida towns, Palmetto Bay and Cutler Bay, where his divorced parents, between whose homes Weinman split his time, each live. His mother's home in Cutler Bay is on the same street where four of the cat killer's victims went missing. The Miami Herald reports on other possible connections:Investigators have said that they grew suspicious about the teenager after reading comments he made about the crimes on the Facebook and MySpace websites. (Weinman even apparently belonged to a "Catch the Cat Killer" group on Facebook, and he was reportedly known in his community as an animal lover.)

Pets play many roles in our lives. Think about your reasons for bringing an animal into your life and make your decisions based on your needs. Here are some typical situations that offer insights:
•Loss of a loved one or a pet often motivates people to acquire a new pet in an effort to lessen the impact of the loss. Assess your feelings about what you are willing to invest emotionally under these circumstances. Appreciate your new pet's individuality; don't make comparisons.
•Studies show that raising children with pets helps them to be more compassionate and sensitive. Teach children to respect the animal by interacting through daily care and appropriate play. An older pet experienced with children may be less challenging for a family.
•You want protection. While some dogs can provide a level of security, the primary role of a pet should be that of a companion.

But think long-term
Acquiring a pet can be a 17-year commitment. Anticipate lifestyle changes that may present unique challenges for you and your pet and be prepared to make adjustments:
•Starting out on your own may provide the impetus to acquire a pet, but being the animal's sole caregiver can be socially and professionally restrictive. A potential first-time pet owner can get a feel for this special bond before committing in various ways — volunteering at a shelter, fostering an animal or watching a friend's or relative's pet.
•Moving often triggers temporary behavior problems requiring understanding and tolerance. You might have to retrain your pet to adjust.
•A couples' first "baby" is often their pet treated like a child. But behavior that is acceptable in the absence of children is often problematic when kids come along. The pet's world changes and, most likely, so do the rules. Dogs are particularly sensitive to change. Set rules and a routine in the beginning that won't change even if your family does.
•"Empty-nesters" may feel loss when children leave home. Caring for a pet provides a sense of purpose but can also impede newfound freedom.
•Retirement provides time to spend with a pet, but consider your plans and whether a pet can be included. Will you relax at home, travel or possibly relocate? A small dog is a wise choice for traveling. A husky would be a poor choice if kenneled often or you relocate to a warm climate.
•As we approach the "golden years," often our spirit is willing, but our bodies aren't quite up to task. Caring for a puppy or kitten can be exhausting. Seniors would do well to consider an older or smaller, more manageable dog.

Make the perfect match
Do your research. Consider the age, size, weight, temperament, energy, health and life expectancy of the new pet and the people in the household.
Assess the size and location of your residence. If you live in an apartment, consider a cat or a quiet dog requiring minimal exercise. A mastiff or a Great Dane, although large, needs less activity than a Jack Russell terrier. All pets require exercise or they can become depressed, overweight or destructive. The amount depends on the individual. A walk around the block can seem like a marathon to a bulldog but is just a warm-up to a Labrador retriever.
Breeds have specific traits and tasks for which they were bred. If the origin of a mixed breed is unknown, so are the traits, but most bad traits are extinguished in mixed breeds through natural selection. An animal's personality is based both on inherent traits and environmental influences.
The perfect match between a pet and owner is precious. It's your job to create it.

Subsidized Predators

It’s estimated that there are 117 million to 150 million free-ranging cats in the United States. They’re the most abundant carnivore in North America today. Moreover, free-ranging domestic cats are considered subsidized predators. They eat cat food at home, and then hunt just for sport, a strategy that allows them to exist at densities far greater than carnivores achieve in nature.

According to Peter P. Marra, a research scientist at the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center at the National Zoo, pointed out that cats were the only domesticated animal permitted to roam. “Pigs have to stay in pens, chickens have to stay in pens,” he said. “Why are cats allowed to run around and do what their instincts tell them to do, which is rampage?”

Although regular stints outdoors are estimated to knock three or more years off a pet cat’s life, why do pet owners do it? In many cases, cat owners have no idea how to create an indoor paradise for their cats. Appropriate toys which bringing out their hunting instincts, cats trees which allow them to climb and in some cases access to a large window to watch the world go by can keep them satisfied at home.

But experts agree when it comes to the question of whether it’s O.K. to let your beloved Cleo, Zydeco or Cocoa wander at will and have their Hobbesian fun. The authorities on both sides of the alley emphatically say, No. There are enough full-time strays; don’t add in your chipper. It is not fair to the songbirds and other animals that domestic cats kill by the billions each year.

"People fool themselves into believing that by simply putting a bell on a cat they could prevent mortality to birds,” says Darin Schroeder, vice president for conservation advocacy at the American Bird Conservancy in Washington. As it happens, many temperate-zone birds go through a dangerous time early in life, when they are too big for the nest but still poor at flying. They’re incredibly vulnerable,” Dr. Marra said, “and in high-cat densities, the fledglings get nailed.”

Furthermore, while some experts believe that they cats should be taken off to the pound, others stand firm on a policy of catch, neuter and release.

Gang of Cats Take to the Streets

Sometimes, it is hard to be a good neighbor. But Helen and Richard Scott live on Jenkins Lane in Union Township, Clermont County, outside of Cincinnati, Ohio are more than good neighbors; they are animal lovers. When an elderly neighbor went to the nursing home, she left her cats behind and that's where the problem starts. At one point, she tried to get them all spayed and neutered but it just got out of hand.

Now, Scott and Richard live next door to at least 25+ cats who call the old woman's trailer home. According to Richard, a new litter is born almost every other week. When the Scott's spoke to elderly woman's son who he lives in Ashville, North Carolina about the situation, he said "Let the cats starve." The Scotts say they won't let that happen. They feed the cats twice a day and pay for the food on their own. Mrs. Scott notes, "There ain’t no way we can take care of all of them or have them fixed,” but "So, if someone would help us or come and get rid of them or pick them up if they really want a cat." They'd like to find a good home for all of the cats or at least find a way to get them spayed and neutered to make the cats more adoptable.

The Scotts contacted the Clermont County Health Department, the Clermont County Humane Society and the Clermont County Sheriff's Department, but didn't get any help. But once news 9News got involved airing a story, an unanimous donor offered help to the Clermont County Humane Society with this colony of cats that have overrun Jenkins Lane. Now, maybe these good neighbors and cat lovers will finally have some help.

Today, pets are in more than 60 percent of American homes. More people are incorporating pets into their leisure time, such as making them part of their exercise routines, taking them to dog parks and bringing them to family events. As a result, research involving human-animal interaction can be extremely beneficial.

This fall, the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine Research Center for Human-Animal Interaction (ReCHAI) will explore the many ways animals benefit people of all ages during the International Society for Anthrozoology and Human-Animal Interaction Conference in Kansas City, Mo., on Oct. 20-25.

The conference will provide a unique opportunity for international experts working in human-animal interaction research to connect with those already working in the health and veterinary medicine fields. A wonderful array of presentations will show how beneficial animals can be in the lives of children, families and older adults.

Earlier this year, the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), one of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), co-hosted two workshops with The WALTHAM® Centre for Pet Nutrition, a division of Mars Incorporated, bringing together leading experts to discuss the benefits of human-animal interaction in childhood. With support from a grant from NICHD and sponsorship from WALTHAM®, the conference will continue this discussion.

Other conference discussions will include ways that human-animal interaction benefits humans and animals, new facets of human-animal interaction, and ways to apply new human-animal interaction knowledge to their fields. Some of the presentations will highlight the special role of companion animals in facilitating reading and physical activity in children and adults.

The few studies that have been conducted suggest that pet ownership may have multiple health and emotional benefits for both children and adults. Studies have shown that pets help lower blood pressure, encourages exercise, improve psychological health. But, there has been relatively little rigorous research documenting these benefits and examining how and why they occur. By providing support for this conference and additional research studies, experts hope to generate some answers.

Help Cats In Mass

Local cat volunteers removed approximately 50 cats and kittens from a foreclosed home on Guisti Drivein Attleboro, Mass on Saturday. This is the region's latest case of apparent animal hoarding. The nonprofit Friends of the Attleboro Animal Shelter is actively seeking homes and monetary donations and gifts of pet supplies for about 34 felines, most of which appear to be under age of four.

The cats, in better shape than you would expect to find in a hoarding situation of this magnitude. It has been reported that the homeowner reportedly lost his job and had his wife die over the past two years. The Cape Cod-style home has been foreclosed and has since been sold. Online city assessors records list the most recent owners as Steven and Robin Burns. The homeowner was present when the cats were removed Saturday.

By Monday morning, the group had arranged to place 14 of the nearly 50 cats: five each at Angelcat Haven in Plainville and Providence Animal Rescue, and four others at the Attleboro Friends of Cats shelter, Knight said.Volunteer Nancy Robinson said six outdoor cats will be spayed and neutered and then held in cages at the city animal shelter.

The cost of getting all these cats vetted is astronomical; None of them are spayed or neutered or have ever received shots. Monetary donations to help volunteers care for the cats can be mailed to: FAAS, P.O. Box 592, Attleboro, MA 02703. Teen Tapes and Bounds Cat

In Philadelphia, a cruel teenager wrapped a cat in duct tape, put her in a shopping bag and left her in a neighbor's backyard.

The Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said James Davis, 19, was arrested Saturday on animal-cruelty charges. Official George Bengal said Davis admitted to taping up the cat from neck to tail after he spotted her in his yard Sept. 21st. Davis left the cat in his yard for a couple of hours, then, because the animal kept screaming, tossed her into a neighbor's yard, where at least 12 hours passed before she was noticed and authorities were contacted, Bengal said.

The cat which was later referred to as Sticky was dehydrated and had to be sedated while the tape was cut off her fur. Animal-welfare workers continue to look for her owner. Release reports state the cat is doing well.

The teen faces up to two years in prison and a minimum $1,000 fine if convicted.

Kids Interacting with Dogs Safely

The American Humane Association is launching KIDS: Kids Interacting with Dogs Safely, a dog bite prevention program targeted to children younger than 7 years of age. The program teaches children to be considerate of dogs' feelings in order to prevent dog bites.

In my book, The Miss Fido Manners (Adams Media) I provide a guide to canine-child interaction. Parents can help by their children by teaching them to respect dog's boundaries and some basic rules.

1. Children need to understand that dogs do not always make good friends.
2. Teach children how important it is to be polite for safety's skae with dog owners and pets. Instruct them to always ask if a dog is firendly and then, if the owners give permission they can pet it.
3. Kids need to learn now to interact positively with dogs. "Show and tell" them how to greet dogs. Tell youngster to be calm around dogs, lower their voice and hold a steady hand so that the dog can sniff it. Show the child first and have her mimic your actions.
4. Tell kids they need to understand the secret language of dogs by reading their body language. Explain when you are happy, you smile. When you are sad, you cry. Without words, your body reacts and shows how you feel. This is true with dogs. A dog's body can demonstrate how he feels.
5. Explain that children should neither dry to comfort the fearful dog or challenge an angry one. Tell them to remain silent, look away from the animal and leave by walking away from the dog slowly.
6. Discuss how dogs don't like surprise. It is better not to disturb a dog that is sleeping, eating or playing with her toys.
7. Ask children from running, screaming or playing on the ground in the presence of a dog
8. More so with boys than girls, tell them not to tease, throw things, play rought or wrestly with a dog.
9. Boys and girls should never sneak food to a dog.
10. Adult supervision is the key.

Dog Spelled Backwards

Recently, I wrote on Twitter if I am jewish is my dog jewish? If you are catholic or protestant does your dog follow your religion?

Although humans have had, worked and used dogs for over 10,000 years, folklore about dogs has not been seriously researched until recently. In Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, the dog is seldom mentioned and when it is, the reference is usually negative. But in ancient Greece, Rome, Persia and China, there is much folklore and superstition surrounding dogs who were written about and/or participated in religious rituals. Moreover, these are the regions where some of the earliest and most sophisticated dog breeding took place, kennel masters were praised and dog were considered companions as well as warriors too.

Over the years but especially in the modern world, views about our dogs have changed. Now, dogs play such a vital role in some people's lives and are considered part of the famly and in many cases, a life-line to the outside world. It is this attitude that has many dog-owning church-goers questioning doctrines teaching that animals do not have souls and do not go to heaven. Many people who love and feel a spiritual connection with their dogs, cats, and other pets complain that compassion for animals is treated as unimportant by the religious community. They complain that spiritual support is lacking during times of pet illness and pet loss.

However, pet owners do have opportunities to have their pets blessed at least once year. This weekend, pet blessings are happening around the world, on or near October 4th for the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi. There are many of the stories that surround the life of St. Francis deal with his love for animals. The two most significant involve him speaking to birds about how they have been blessed God and the other describes him making peace between a wolf and the village he terrorized for food. He is a favorite saint because he preached to man and beast the universal ability and duty of all creatures to praise God and the duty of men to protect and enjoy nature as both the stewards of God's creation and as creatures ourselves.

In order to celebrate his universally message, manhattan pet owners can go to uptown to the Episcopal St. John the Divine at 1047 Amserdam Avenue or downtown to catholic St. Anthony of Padua Church on 154 Sullivan Street to have their animal blessed.

I am jewish but I am going to take this opportunity to get my pets blessed.

I believe HE is everywhere.

Are You A Cat or Dog Person?

The Cat Fanciers’ Association® (CFA) is asking cat owners to cast their vote to pronounce cats America’s most favored pet in the MeetTheBreeds.com pet preference poll. Preliminary results indicate that dogs are leading the pack with 74%, while cats have 26% of the vote.

Pam DelaBar, President & CEO of the CFA is calling on approximately 88.3 million cat owners in the United States to wake up from their cat nap and vote. “Cat owners outnumber dogs by nearly 13 million among the pet-owning public,” said DelaBar. “What better way to share your love for your feline by casting your vote and giving cats the respect they deserve.”

An Evening of Imagery and Dialogue

Goodbye, a provocative short film about the effect of technology on our most important relationships, is scheduled for a private screening by the Metropolitan Dog Club on Thursday, October 15th at the Metropolitan Republican Club at 122 East 83rd Street between Lexington and Park Avenues. Members and guests of the dog club are invited to attend an evening composed of the screening followed by an open discussion about the way our lives and our dogs' lives have changed in the 21st century.

The film, set against a New York City backdrop, follows a day-in-the-life of an average New Yorker, severely reliant upon her tools of technology. The narration of the film unites the everyday images on the screen with a new sense of understanding and purpose for what it means to create, have and sustain meaningful relationships with daily distractions. Time for a Pet Move

Now that Matt is working in New York City, we decided that we need a change of venue. Really, we just need a fresh start in an apartment that we can decorate together. We need an apartment that will really just belong to both us.

While I love living on Broome Street with all of its advantages: Prada, Chanel, the Apple Store, Dean & DeLuca, Whole Foods, etc. And all of my Chinese and Senior Italian friends, we are really tired of the tourists, the traffic and dirt. Must I not forgot San Genaro. Two weeks of living Hell on Earth. With urine, vomit and rat infested street in which food is left out. Don't let me get started.
We need to move because we need more room. The solution is to pack it all up and move way uptown to a bigger apartment at a reasonable price. And that is why I decided to look on the Upper West in the 150's and 160's.

After a quick trip to my storage facility to reorganize and deliver boxes, we stopped for lunch at Charlie's Southern Fried Chicken at 151 at 8th Avenue for some down home gluttonous gourmet. We convenienced ourselves we need strenth before viewing apartments! We ate fried chicken, mac & cheese, sweet potatoes, ribs, collard greens, green beans and more. There was even food to bring home for dinner. After sitting down to feast, I controlled myself so that I did not eat so much food that I couldn't look at apartments.

After a massive lunce, we hooked up with a real estate agent to view apartments. We primarily looked at building one block east or west of Broadway. Matt and I were happy to see clean street, nice folks and large, pet friendly apartments. Before meeting with the broker, I reviewed a booklet that I wrote in 2002 about finding and relocating to a new home.

1. Discuss your pet(s) at your first meeting with a real estate professional. Tell your agent about its breed, size and personality.

2. Avoid realtors who encourage you to be dishonest about your pet. Work with professionals who want to help you find the best home for you and your animal.

3. Seek-out animal appropriate locations-buildings with service elevators, large hallways and a friendly staff, residential communities with sidewalks.

4. Think about your animal's needs. Make sure that your new residence is big enough. For cats, choose a home with a large lighted window For Dogs, pick a place with a yard nearby park or dog run.

5. Before moving, visit the neighborhood to seek out other pet owners. Ask if your new residence and neighborhood are animal-friendly.

6. Investigate all animal-related costs. Many apartments buildings, condos, co-ops and gated communities require tenants/owners to pay a nonrefundable bond for their animals. Ask if there are monthly pet maintenance fees.

In Need of Grooming for Prison Guidance

The Decatur Correctional Center in Illinois is looking for a dog groomer, willing to work behind bars.

The center runs a dog-grooming training program, and Kim Schwalbach, the woman who has led it since 2002 is stepping down, the Chicago Tribune reported.

The program is known as CLIP, which stands for Correctional Ladies Improving Pets.
Thirty-six year-old Katrina Williamson went through the program and says it changed her life. She landed a job grooming dogs right out of prison. Prison official Mike Dooley says few of the women who have worked with Schwalbach have returned to prison.

And that's a good thing.

According to the Greensboro News-Record, a freelance dog groomer in Greensboro, N.C., was charged with killing her roommate’s dog.

Amanda Todd, 21, was arrested Friday and charged with felony cruelty to animals. Police say Todd’s roommate left the dog with her. Todd became agitated with the dog and threw the animal across the room. The dog died from its injuries. Todd was arrested and held on $1000 bond. She has been released from jail.

Protests Held in South Korea over Dog Meat

Protests were held in Seoul at at South Korean consulates and embassies around the world yesterday. Why? Because the International Day of Action for Dogs and Cats in South Korea has called for an end to using dogs and cats as food.

According to United Dogs and Cats head Ragnar Sass, “This is probably the cruelest thing that could happen to companion animals - many are tortured and end up on dinner tables. And the strangest thing is that it is happening right under our noses in one of the most rapidly developing countries in the 21st century.”

In Seoul, members of the group Coexistence for Animal Rights on Earth wore dog costumes and climbed into cages in a downtown plaza to draw attention to the issue.
“Dogs and cats are not livestock, but they are our partners. They are not food, but they are our friends,” one protester told New Tang Dynasty Television (click the link for a video). “We should abolish the bad habits of eating dogs or cats.”

Although the practice is illegal under South Korean law, an underground industry continues to flourish, with thousands of restaurants in Seoul alone serving dog. Some studies have estimated as many as one in three South Koreans have eaten dog meat.

Animal advocacy groups argue that eating dog — whether its part of the country’s culture or not — is a practice that should be ceased. Others disagree. “It’s my country’s own food culture, so South Koreans will continue to eat dog meat no matter what other countries say against it,” Park Seo-ho, who owns a restaurant that sells dog meat, told the BBC.

An international online petition campaign at has been launched in 10 languages world wide to stop the consumption of dog meat , where some groups estimate more than 2 million dogs are raised and killed for food at dog farms in South Korea every year. United Dogs and Cats is hosting an online petition campaign to draw the world’s attention to the cruel treatment of many dogs in South Korea despite animal protection laws that have been in place since early 1990s.
During the first week of the campaign, over 50,000 signatures were gathered world wide.

I have travelled for business, pleasure and show with dogs, cats and birds. Transporting pets over long distances can be very stressful. The realities are that commerical airlines allow a limited number of small pets to fly in the cabin. Others pets can either be checked as baggage or cargo and spend time in a dark, cargo hold where temperatures can vary. In sum, each time you fly with pets can be tricky business with delays, stop-overs and dealing with their regular constitutions.

But now, there is a new option for pet owners that just got off the ground Tuesday. It is Pet Airways.

A husband and wife team, Binder and Wiesel, used their consulting backgrounds and business acumen to start Pet Airways in 2005. They have spend the last four years designing their fleet of five planes to deal with FAA regulations, four-legged comfort and needs as well as setting up airport schedules.

The two say they’re overwhelmed with the response. Flights on Pet Airways are already booked up for the next two months.

Pet Airways will fly a pet between five major cities — New York, Washington, Chicago, Denver, and Los Angeles. The $250 one-way fare is comparable to pet fees at the largest U.S. airlines.

Pet owners recognize the need for service and Pet Airways purports to have it. Dogs and cats will fly in the main cabin of a Suburban Air Freight plane, retooled and lined with carriers instead of passenger seats. About 50 pets on each flight will be escorted to the plane by attendants that will check on the animals every 15 minutes during the flight. The pets are also given pre-boarding walks and bathroom breaks. And at each of the five airports it serves, the company has created a "Pet Lounge" for pet fliers to wait before being boarded

The company will operate out of smaller, regional airports in their five launch cities. This will mean more money and an extra trip to and from an airport for pet owners whose dogs and cats fly with them. Additionally, stops in cities along the way means the pets will take longer to reach a destination than their owners. For example, a trip from New York to Los Angeles, can take 24 hours. On that route, pets stop in Chicago, have a bathroom break, play time, dinner, and bunk for the night before finishing the trip the next day.

The company, which will begin with one flight in each of its five cities, is looking to add more flights and cities soon. In the next three years, the Company hopes to fly to 25 locations.

In the mean time, I will still take my dogs on Delta, American & Continental. At least they can travel in the cabin with me and Matt.

A Rose By Any Other Name

According to an Associated Press-Petside.com poll of more than 1,000 pet owners released last Tuesday, July 29th, almost half of American pet owners gave an animal a human-like name, such as Jack or Sophie. Some of the more unusual names: Hollywood and Chichi Mittens, both cats; Vegas the Labrador Retriever; Jibber Jack the dog; the Beagle named Talulublue, and Louis XIV, the Yorkie.

But 49% of respondents, including 51 percent of dog owners and 50 percent of cat owners, had given at least one of their pets a human-like name. The most popular? Max got more mentions than other names in the AP Poll, but not enough to give it any broad claim of popularity.

Veterinary Pet Insurance also keeps database of pet names and found that Max pops up more frequently than any other name. According to VPI spokesman Curtis Steinhoff,
there has been a move away from dog names such as Spot and Lassie. In VPI's database in 2008, there were 13 Fidos placing the name at No. 2,866; Rover was No. 2,534; behind names like Grendel, Ginger Snap and Munchie.

Steinhoff believes that this trend reflects a stronger bond between people and their pets. Additionally, veterinarian Wayne Eldridge, believes that pet owners who give their pets human names are more likely to see them as full members of the family. But he also cautions against reading too much into pet names. Many people choose names based on the animal's appearance, he said. One of the most unusual names in the VPI database was Snag L. Tooth for a cat with a "snaggle tooth" that protrudes.
And some people don't know why they chose a certain name for their pet.

Like Beth Hart, 63, of Houston, who started naming her dogs Sassoon for the hair salon Vidal Sassoon. Her current Shih Tzuh is Sassoon the Third. Her husband named their Lhaso Apso, "Dawg," their second dog with that name.
Daniel Rivera, 23, of Lansing, Mich. said his 4-year-old daughter named their pit bull lab mix Little Fella. He said he guesses the name fits since the dog has very short legs. For some it's all about being creative. Susan Jacobs, 45, of Long Beach, Calif., named her black poodle Kingston for her best vacation ever.
"It was beautiful, the people, the music, the warm weather," she said of her trip to Jamaica a decade ago. "Now whenever I say his name, I think of that time of in my life."

Go figure, I named my dogs Hudson, Thames, Rhone and Teign after European rivers. I am thinking Meuse, Vienne, and Seine for my next three toy spaniels.

Animal lovers have more options than ever to keep their pets healthy. To keep pets healthy, American pet owners are spending big bucks so that their pet can receive MRI exams, ultrasounds, cruciate ligament repairs, hip replacement surgery and other specialized procedures. High-tech scanning equipment and complicated surgeries are driven by client demand.

Some procedures cost hundreds or thousands of dollars, and some pet owners admit to spending $10,000 or $20,000 on vet bills. Still, dedicated pet owners aren’t complaining because they consider and treat their cats and dogs like family members and whatever is takes to care for them.

A poll released last week by the Associated Press and Petside revealed that 50% of respondents believe their pets are full-fledged members of their household.

Moreover, about 62 percent of U. S. households own a pet, and pet owners will spend $45.4 billion on their animals this year, the American Pet Products Association estimates. Of that total, $12.2 billion will go to veterinary care, a 10% increase over 2008.

Pets require more care because, as a result of better preventive care, medicine, vitamins and diet, they are living longer. But this extra money also is paying for new and advanced veterinary procedures.

“With almost every specialty comes specialized equipment,” says Jim Flanders, a small animal surgeon said. “It’s usually something that’s been around for a while in human medicine, and we adopt and adapt it.”

Not every pet owner has the means, or the desire, to pay for expensive procedures. And surgery or radiation treatment isn’t always the right answer for a sick pet, experts said. Owners have to weigh the age of the pet, how stressful the surgery and post-surgery recovery will be and what the pet’s quality of life will be afterward.

In response to rising costs, some owners have turned to pet health insurance, though estimates suggest just 2 percent to 4 percent of Americans have done so.

High-tech veterinary care isn’t the only outlet for pet owners. Alternative and holistic treatments such as pet acupuncture are growing popular, though some two-legged skeptics question their value.

And the specialized care doesn’t end when a pet dies: Grieving owners now can retain the services of a pet funeral home.

Off to Twin Brooks Kennel Club Dog Show

My friend, Jane, and I recently applied to the Twin Brooks Kennel Club. The President, Ruth and her husband, Donnie are our friends and of course, Jane's mother Marcia (Bedlington Terriers) was a member, too.

Next week is the club's big show which is really two shows, back to back, at the William G. Mennen Sports Arena, 161 Hanover Avenue, Morristown, NJ 07960. If you have time, stop by and see the beautiful dogs and meet knowledgeable dog handlers and owners.

If you are looking for a purebred pooch to add to your family, this is the place to be. Take the time to meet some of the breeders, dog owners and handers who spend time breeding and working with these dogs. Dogs at the your local dog shows generally conform to the breed standard; are health tested; and are loved, cared for and socialized well.

If you see a breed that you are fond of, don't be shy ask a question. Just not right before the handler has to the dog in the show ring. And for those of you who do not have time to go to a show, check out the akc.org website and learn more about a breed in which you are interested. Breed clubs can put you in touch with breeders who have pups for sale.

Before buying a dog, do your research. Just don't purchase a $2000 mutt because it has a cute name like shih-chi.

Tough Economic Times Spare Dogs Big Booms

Patriotic pride is bumping up against economic reality again this summer, as communities across the country struggle to fund Fourth of July fireworks displays. The annual light shows are being scaled back in many places or have been canceled in many counties across the country. Moreover, most communities have avoided blackouts by cutting budgets to match the economic times, or finding private benefactors.

In any case, communities that are continuing to celebrate this wonderful celebration, should remind their pet owners to take care of their dogs. While a booming fireworks display maybe the perfect culmination to Fourth of July festivities, pets can be frightened by such activities.

"Pets are family members, and most people include them in their holiday plans, but on a holiday full of activities like our nations' birthday, most pets will be more comfortable at home with their normal everyday routines," said Adam Goldfarb, director of the pets at risk program at The Humane Society of the United States. "So on this Fourth of July, spare your pets the stress of fireworks and crowds and ensure that everyone has a safe and happy holiday."

The HSUS recommends pet owners to leave your pet at home. Fireworks displays can be disorienting and frightening to pets, even those who are well socialized. Families can still enjoy the outdoor festivities by simply having someone remain home to look after pets.

For example, I will be going to two parties but stopping home after each fiesta to check to provide my four ETS with a snack and relief walk. I hate mosquitoes, but they sure love me! As the weather has gotten warmer, they have feasted on my blood and left my arm and legs, covered with red, itchy bites. Over the years, I have sprayed bug spray on my arms and legs, as a preventative measure before going to bed at night. I'm sure you can imagine that my husband does not find the scent of bug spray to be very... well, romantic.

Recently, I was sent a sample of Bug Bam. Bug Bam was developed by an Australian outdoor enthusiast and environmentalist who was thwarted by mosquitoes on his wilderness adventures. While I may not be in the outback on Broome Street in NYC, I can say that wearing a Bug Bam wristband to bed has hindered those mosquito predators from enjoying me as a midnight snack. Enjoy the sand and sea with your pooch this summer! Before embarking on a beachside retreat, however, review the following tips from pet expert Charlotte Reed, the author of The Miss Fido Manners Complete Book of Dog Etiquette (Adams Media). Learn how to be a socially aware pet owner while you and your pooch are basking in the sun and surf.

1. Check In Advance-Prior to arriving at your beach destination, with your dog in tow, check with the city, municipality or state park to determine if your pet is allowed on the beach. During peak tourist season, typically May-September, there is a greater likelihood that dogs will not be welcome on the beach or may be subjected to restricted hours (before 9:00 AM or after 6:00 PM). Find out a beach's pet policy in advance of your visit so, if needed, alternate accommodations for your pet can be secured.

2. Pack Prepared-Your pet has needs at the beach just as they do at home. To ensure your dog has as great a time as you do, pack extra water, a plastic reusable water bowl, doggy clean up bags and/or pooper scooper, water safety equipment, such as a life vest or preserver, a first aid kit, waterproof and/or antimicrobial leash and collar, and floating dog toys that can be seen on the top of the ocean, thwarting a dog's need to dive beneath the waves in pursuit of a beloved toy.

3. Comply with Leash Laws-Allowing your dog to roam free on the beach can be dangerous to both your pet and other occupants. By keeping your pet on a leash at all times, you ensure that your pet is under control, out of harms way, unable to bother other beach goers or have an altercation with another dog. In many cases, leash laws can regulate the lengths of leashes to 6 or 8 feet. In that case, your pet may not be able to run at the end of a retractable. Be aware of all leash laws as most are coupled with a monetary fine for those choosing to disregard this common sense, and common courtesy, rule.

4. Training for Good Measure-Teach your pet to recall, or to come on command so that you can have verbal control over when he is off-leash.

5. Take Care of the Environment-Environmentalists, state and local agencies are concerned with the preservation of wildlife that nests and plants that are grown on the coastal shore. Be sure your frolicking dog does not disturb nests or destroy area wildlife in their quest for enjoyment.

6. Frequent Pet Friendly Areas-As a conciliatory measure for dog owners some local governments and state parks have designated shoreline dog play areas. Such areas are like a dog park at the beach! As a result, treat the dog beach like your dog park at home. Show your appreciation for local government and state parks recognition by complying with the posted rules and regulations. Supervise your pet at all times as they revel in playing with the other dogs in the water and swimming. And just like at home, remove your pet from the action if a fight breaks out.

7. Pick-Up after Your Pet-Dog waste on the beach can ruin any beach lovers day. One of the main reasons pets have been prohibited at the beach is because of the waste their owners choose to leave behind, polluting the sand and surf. Be respectful of the beach and its patrons, pick up and dispose of all dog waste in appropriate receptacles. This does not necessarily include the garbage cans of a homeowner that lives on the shoreline. Use public access waste facilities or take dog waste with you for disposal.

8. Quick Rinse-Being itchy and irritated isn't fun for anyone, this includes your pet. After a day at the beach rinse your pooch off with water at a convenient beachside shower to remove sand, salt and small beach bugs. This will keep your dog comfortable and your hotel, rental home or beach house clean.

I Got A Bulldog

According to the 2007 American Kennel Club registration figures, the Bulldog muscled its way into the 10th spot on the organization's annual list of the most popular breeds in America. This year, it was revealed that in 2008, the popular college mascot breed waddled its way up to the number 8 spot, while the Labrador still continues to remain the most popular dog breed in the United States. What spot will the bulldog take in 2009? Inquiring minds want to know.

But really, whether you have a Bulldog #8, Labrador #1, Yorkshire Terrier #2, Dachshund #7, Poodle #9 or Pug #15, you are your dog's biggest fan. Although my breed is not represented, I have become smitten with this kennel of FouFou Dog luggage tags. They are just adorable! Feline Jumping For Joy

My cat, Hayden, loves the BOLT. In the last few weeks, my husband and I have been amused by Hayden's pouncing, chasing, jumping and batting at the laser dot throughout our kitchen. Hayden seems to enjoy the BOLT more than other laser toys because the laser patterns are more random than other laser toys, resulting in his higher level of enthusiastic play.

Additionally, the BOLT is different than other laser toys because it can be used automatically or manually. While my husband, Matthew, prefers to set in the automatic mode so that Hayden can get a timed, 15-minute play session, I choose to use it in the manual mode to create my own laser patterns. I use the adjustable mirror to aim the laser toy across a variety of surfaces like floors, tables, and walls and watch Hayden somersault into pure joy.

For Love Of A Dyson

I love Dyson! I got my first Dyson Animal Vac about five years ago, and I haven't been the same since. I vacuum in the morning, in the evening and even to relax. I enjoy the vacuum so much, I want to share the experience with my friends. Once, I even arranged to have one shipped to my friend, Bob Vetere, the President of the American Pet Products Association, for a holiday gift. Bob, who has a Golden Retriever, told me that he never vacuumed, but once he got the Dyson, he was never quite the same. Now, to his wife's delight, he actually likes to vacuum, and does so more frequently in their New England home.

Presently, I am enjoying the Dyson 25, a perfect apartment vacuum. Even with four dogs, two cats and two birds, Matthew and I still enjoy a clean home. Frequent vacuuming is most definitely par for the animal course in our house!

And, how can I forget! I use the Dyson Handheld in my car and around my desk to clean up the crumbs, dirt and cat hair.

Canine Sport

Dog agility is a canine sport in which a handler directs a dog through a course of standard obstacles laid-out by a judge in a race for time and accuracy. Dogs run off leash and the handler can not use food or toys as incentives for performance. Moreover, the handler is not permit to touch the dog or the obstacles, except accidentally. Handler controls are limited to voice, movement, and various body signals, requiring exceptional training of her animal.

Agility course consists of a set of standard obstacles:

A-frame-Two broad ramps, usually about 3 feet wide by 8 to 9 feet long, hinged together and raised so that the hinged connection is between five feet above the ground, forming an A shape;

Dogwalk-Three 8 to 12 ft planks that are 9 to 12 inches wide and connected at the ends. The centre plank is raised about 4 feet above the ground, so that the two end planks form ramps leading up to and down from the center plank.

Teeter-totter-A 10 to 12 foot plank pivoting on a support, like a child's seesaw.

Tunnel (chute or rigid tunnel)-A vinyl tube, 10 to 20 feet long and about 2 feet in diameter, through which the dog runs. .

Jump-Two uprights supporting a horizontal bar over which the dog jumps. The height is adjusted for dogs of different heights.

Tire jump-Roughly the size of a tire, suspended in a frame. The dog must jump through the opening of the "tire"; like other jumps, the height is adjusted for dogs of different sizes.

Table -An elevated square platform about 3-foot-by-3-foot square onto which the dog must jump and pause, either sitting or in a down position, for a designated period of time (usually about 5 seconds) which is counted out by the judge.

Weave poles- Like a slalom, this is a series of 5 to 12 upright poles, each about 3 feet tall and spaced about 20 inches apart, through which the dog weaves.

To prepare for competition, a handler must take the time to highly train her dog and implement numerous strategies to direct her dog for precision and speed. But really, for the average dog and his owner, agility owner is all about fun and spending time together.

A few years, ago I took an agility course with my dog, Hudson at the ASPCA in New York City. It was an amazing experience for both of us. Although Hudson was a bit shy going thru the tunnels, he managed to enjoy the jumps and weave poles and wasn't afraid of the a-frame, dogswalk or see-saw. Over the course of a few weeks, I recognize that Hudson became more athletic and a much more confident dog. Perhaps, I should do some agility with my other dogs, especially Rhone and Teign for just that reason. They are both shy and introverted-typically English Toy Spaniels.

Moreover even if you don't have time to take an agility classes, there are inexpensive agility kits that you can buy. Spend some quality time with your dog this summer in the backyard conditioning him all for sporting fun. Better yet, if you want to experience pure doggie joy, incorporate agility into any type of dog party. Watching a Great Pyrenees, walk over planks and barrel through tunnels is just as much fun as watching a Toy Poodle discover her athletic ability on a low hurdle.

A Foodie's Dream Come True

Last night, my husband and I attended the Black Tie dinner at the National Arts Club to honor Jacques Pepin. Chef Pepin was presented with our club's Medal of Honor For Excellence in the Culinary Arts. Included in the evening was a charity auction to aid The Jacques Pepin Scholarship Fund administered by The Culinary Trust.

I was first introduced to the Arts Club by my dear friend, Jane St.Lifer Kennedy. Thru her generous support and sponsorship, I became a member of this wonderful organization. Moreover, Jane is truly Miss Congeniality, but more importantly, was the auctioneer of last night's event. Mrs. Kennedy gloriously entertained us with her vibrant personality while conveniencing folks to buy more items to benefit the scholarship fund. She auctioned Chef Pepin's watercolors prints, his painted chef coats and a library of his books.

Last night, Jane, Matthew and I had such delight because we sat at the B table. We sat with many of Chef Pepin's friend including Chef Andre Soltner, Chef Jacques Torres, and Sarah Moulton. Also, sitting with us was Chef-Scholar Cathy Kaufman.

Although Chef Pepin was not cooking, he recipes were served. Joseph Fappaolo, the Executive Chef at the club prepared such fine food. We were served Charles Heidsieck Brut Reserve Champagne, Lobster salad with tarragon accompanied by Domaine Laroche Chablis, Roasted veal tenders stuffed with proscuitto and porcini mushrooms accompanied by Embrix de Vall-Llach Priorat, and Chocolate roulade with fresh fruit accompaned by Presidential Vintage Port 1994.

Gifts Bags included Jacques Torres Chocolate, Illy Caffe, OXO International and BlackRock Investments.

All truly enjoyed the evening.

Frightened Dancer Still Running After All These Years

An energetic pup named Dancer ran away from her South Austin home eight years ago. Her owner, Alison Murphy, made all the right moves to find her: called shelters, vets and animal organization as well as put out fliers even offering a $500 reward for the terrier mix. Unfortunately, Dancer who was wearing two ID tags and had a microchip was nowhere to be found until last week.

The Humane Society in New Braunfels called to tell them that their little white dog had been found. Dancer who no longer responds to her name is back at home. A musician in New Braunfels found the dog running around his neighborhood and took her home last week. He kept her a few days, and then went to the Humane Society to see if the dog had a microchip, and perhaps, an owner.

How the dog spent the last eight years is a mystery. Dancer is in good physical shape, her teeth are in great shape and she doesn't even have fleas. Obviously, she was well taken care of.

But old habits die hard. Just last week, she bolted out the door of a pet store when Alison when she stopped to by the dog a new collar and leash. It took and hour and more than a dozen dog lover samaritans to capture the frightened dog.

Murphy has learned a valuable lesson and will take Dancer to obedience class.

Moreover, sometimes dogs need more than a license, identification tags and a microchip. This is why it is so important to train your dog. All dogs should sit, stay, and COME. Although it is one of the hardest commands to teach, dog owners should practice this command on a daily basis. Like Alison, you never know when you are going to need it, even after eight years.

I write this note to all of my veterinarians – the practitioners that I have and do frequent; my friends; and club members. In celebration of National Pet Week,I want to extend my deep appreciation for your help, guidance and expertise when caring for the furry members of my family, as well as taking care of me.

You have all been an invaluable resource, both to me and to my pets over the years. In emergency situations – such as when one of my dogs got a paper clip lodged in his molar – you and your staff saw him immediately and assured me he would be fine. Your concern and prompt response calmed my nerves; something I am eternally grateful for.

During routine check-ups for my barking brood and meowing muses or when I just want to call in with a question, you have always been kind, gentle and thorough. The suggestions and tips you have given me to keep my four-legged friends healthy and happy have been widely employed. Ultimately, your dedication and compassion led me to dedicate an entire chapter in my book, The Miss Fido Manners Complete Book of Dog Etiquette,(Adams Media, 2007), to teaching others how to properly treat their veterinarian.

Being a responsible pet owner is not only important, but imperative. In today’s tough economic times, spending more conservatively is natural, but the health and safety of my pets is not a place for financial cutbacks. Taking my pets to the vet for both preventative and emergency services is quintessential to preserving their life and well-being. Thank you for teaching me that.

Pet Munching on Houseplants Proves Fatal

Months after a Labrador Retriever-mix puppy, was adopted by a family from the Houston SPCA, she was rushed to a nearby emergency clinic after showing signs of illness. The puppy had eaten parts of sago palm plant, a common houseplant that is highly toxic to dogs and cats.

According to the ASPCA there has been an increase in sago palm and cycad poisoning, since 2003, with 50 to 75 percent of those ingestions resulting in fatalities. All parts of the plant are poisonous; signs of illness include vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, depression, seizures and liver failure.

All pet owners should be aware of poisonous plants and other household substances that pose danger to dogs and cats. Some plants that are dangerous to pets include:

Autumn crocus (Colchicum): Its active ingredient, colchicines, triggers an anti-metabolic effect that can cause rapidly dividing cells, shedding of the gastrointestinal tract, bloody diarrhea, and vomiting.

Azalea (Rhododendron): This popular plant can harm a dog's cardiovascular system and trigger vomiting or gastrointestinal upset.

Daffodil (Narcissus): Toxic ingredients in the bulbs cause convulsions, tremors, lethargy, weakness, and upset stomachs.

Hyacinth (Hyacinth): This popular plant can cause severe vomiting, bloody diarrhea, depression, and tremors.

Japanese yew (Taxis): Extremely toxic to dogs, this group of ornamental plants can cause seizures or cardiac failure. The plant and red berries are toxic.

Lily of the valley (Convalaria): This plant can cause heart failure, coordination problems, and vomiting.

Oleander (Nerium): Extremely toxic, this popular outdoor plant contains cardiac glycosides that harm the heart, decrease body temperature, cause abnormal pulse rate, and can cause death. Beware: Even people have died from eating hot dogs roasted on an oleander twig.

Rhubarb (Rheum): Although the stalks are used to make pies, the leaves pack the potential to cause kidney damage.

Sago palm (Cycads): Resembling an upside down pineapple, this plant thrives in sandy soils, especially in warmer states such as California, Texas, and Florida. A few seeds can kill a dog.

Tomato (Lycopersicion): Surprisingly, the greenery of this common plant, not the tomato itself, contains solanine, a toxic ingredient that can prompt gastric upset, depression, weakness, and a decrease in heart rate.

This week, May 4-10, is National Pet Week ("NPW"). This celebration includes paying tribute to the more than 172 million companion animals that live in this country and the remarkable role that they play in improving the quality of our lives. All across the nation, pet owners, pet professionals and others will use this opportunity to educate the public on how pets improve human health, and how pet owners can return the favor.

National Pet Week was established in 1981 by the AVMA and its charitable auxiliary to promote responsible pet ownership and awareness of veterinary medicine, and celebrate the human-animal bond. This year, the theme is "Pets Jazz up Our Lives" in recognition of the AVMA convention in New Orleans July 19-22.

Educating adults and children about responsible pet ownership is one of the most important elements of National Pet Week. Teachers are encouraged to visit the National Pet Week website here where they can download lesson plans and work sheets about pet safety and veterinary medicine.

In the case of Chanel

That's Chanel. She is a seven-year old Daschund, belonging to my friends Carole and Frank. Carole called called me yesterday to alert me to Chanel's medical problems. She told me that Chanel was in a New Jersey veterinarian hospital on the verge of death. The vet on duty was in the processing of diagnosing her but believed that she might have Hemorrhagic gastroenteritis (HGE). HGE is a disease syndrome seen in dogs, characterized by the acute (sudden) onset of bloody diarrhea, accompanied by high packed cell volumes (red blood cells). The cause of HGE is unknown.

All breeds can be affected, although the incidence is greater in small breed dogs. Schnauzers, Dachshund, Yorkshire terriers, and miniature poodles are the most commonly affected by HGE which usually occurs in adult dogsm over 5 years. HGE is most often seen in city dogs, or dogs housed in urban areas.

Symptoms of HGE is acute vomiting, anorexia, depression and bloody diarrhea. The onset of HGE is usually very quick with no previous warning signs or health problems reported in the affected individuals. Signs progress rapidly and become severe within a few hours. Signs of shock, collapse, and sudden death have been reported.

Diagnostic efforts include:
Complete blood count (CBC)
Biochemical profile
Urinalysis
Fecal examination
Elisa for parvovirus
Bacteria cultures and cytology of the stool
Coagulogram, or clotting profile
Abdominal radiographs (X-rays) should be obtained to eliminate a foreign body or other disease process.

Patients suspected of having HGE are hospitalized and treated aggressively because clinical deterioration is rapid and fatal. Treatment includes: aggressive fluid therapy. In most cases, Antibiotics are recommended. The patient should be kept off food and water until signs are clearly resolving, and the PCV is within normal range. A bland, easy to digest diet should be given for several days, and then your pet can be weaned back to its regular food if his condition has improved.

The prognosis for patients with HGE is excellent if it is caught early and treated aggressively. If you suspect your pet may have HGE, seek veterinary attention immediately. Administer all medication and recommended diet as directed by your veterinarian. Because there is no known cause of the syndrome, there are no preventative measures that can be recommended in these patients.

Although Chanel has many of HGE symptons-except for the diarrhea-, she does not has this illness. Presently, she has labored breathing and her lungs have been filling up with fluids. The vet is bringing in a cardiologist as heart disease is suspected.

I am praying for Chanel and will keep you updated as to her condition.

My Dogs Shines Brite

Summer is just around the corner, and my husband and I are looking forward to participating in a wide range of outdoor recreational activities, including boating and swimming with our four English Toy Spaniels. While at our second home in the Outer Banks, a long string of narrow barrier islands of the coast of North Carolina, protecting my dogs while engaged in water activities is paramount, because such activities can lead to loss, injury or even drowning.

Solutions for Guests Allergic to Dogs and Cats

A national survey conducted by the National Institute of Enivornmental Health Sciences and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Developement to measure levels of indoor allergens that might trigger asthma, revealed that in homes with dogs the levels of allergens were high enough to trigger allergies or asthma. People with dog allergies are generally sensitve to dog dander, saliva, and urine. Cat allergies, twice as common as allergies to dogs, affect about six to ten million Americans. People with cat allergies are generally sensitive to all cats.

If friends or family decide to come for a visit or to stay in your home, ask invitees if they suffer from dog or cat allergies and discuss the best manner in which you can alleviate their sensitivities. In most cases, grooming your pet before your visitors turn up can be effective. Products such as LoShed and Allerpet can also reduce shedding and dander. Besides treating your dog or cat, thoroughly clean your home by vacuuming carpets and rugs, dusting surfaces and washing floors.

Once you clean your guest room, limit pet access. If possible, place a HEPA air purifier where guests sleep. The National Bureau of Standards states that air filtered by a HEPA unit is free of 99.97% of all contaminating particles. Allergy experts claim that if you can breathe pure air for at least 8 to 10 hours each night, you can probably tolerate more exposure to allergenic substances during the day.

Most importantly, encourage your guests to discuss increasing doses of their allergy medications with their physicians.

After writing all this, just tell them it would be better for them to stay in a hotel.

Puppy Love Rehabilitates

Since I am supporter of the New York City organization, Puppies Behind Bars, I am always uplifted when I articles or any information about prisoners working with pets. The Des Moines Register profiled two Iowa prisons which encourage inmates to rehabilitate dogs and cats so that these animas can be placed in loving homes.

About 100 dogs annually receive care from Mitchellville Prison inmates through the prison's PAWS program, which stands for Pets and Women Succeeding. Five inmates provide full-time care for dogs through the Mitchellville's PAWS program. They work in two, eight-hour shifts each day, using dog-friendly methods to teach dog training basics, including housebreaking and crate training as well as walking on a leash. Additionally, at the Iowa Correctional Institution for Women, is the WHISKERS program. WHISKERS, an acronym for Women Helping Indigent Special Kittens Earn Residence, care for abandoned cats and kittens.

Last year, my dog club, the Metropolitan Dog Club, sponsored Metropolitan, a Puppy Behind Bars, last year. Although we received regular letters from her puppy raiser, Rosa, who was incarcarated at the women's correctional facility in Bedford, NY, we never knew how much Metro meant to Rosa until we got the scrapbook that Rosa made of Metro's accomplishments. The day that I got it, I cried and cried and cried because I knew how much that little puppy meant to Rosa. Belive it or not, Rosa included Metro's nail clipping. Actually, I am crying now thinking about it. Metro has moved on; she is currently working as a canine explosion detection dog and Rosa was paroled from the Bedford facility in November. Metro was her last dog.

According to the linked article, with a declining economy, Chicago animal control workers are seeing an 11% increase of surrendered pets as compared with more than a year ago. One new group of individuals that is standing out as surrenderees is folks that are generally unaccustomed to economic distress. This group of individuals is surrendering more purebred and "designer" dogs due to lay-offs, foreclosures and other economic pressures. Moreover, animal care workers are also seeing more pets that are being medically neglected and surrendered because their owners can not afford to take them to vet or pay for specific veterinary procedures.

On October 24, 2009, the date of my last satellite tour as well as in my book, the Miss Fido Manners Complete Book of Dog Etiquette, I talk about life's circumstantances changing and how there are times when some of us are confronted with the decision of whether to give up our pets. Before deciding to relinquish your pet, I ask a pet owner to investigate all possiblilites for keeping their dog. If you really can't maintain your pet, take time to find him a good home prior to leaving him with a local animal shelter.

Before turning your pet over to any animal placement organization, try to find your pooch or kitty a good home on your own. Ask family members, friends, neighbors, colleagues, dog lovers and pet professionals if they would like to temporarily foster your dog or know anyone else who would.

Next, search for an organization that can foster your pet until you can get back on your feet. programs. Moreover, in some cases, some kennels might work out financial arrangements with individuals whose pets need temporary housing.

If you have exhausted all of your personal and professional contacts, you will need to use a reputable organization and/or web sites to help you. Don't make the mistake of placing an advertisement in a newspaper offering your pet as "FREE" to a good home. Unscrupulous people searching for laboratory animals, as well as dog fighters, obtain pets this way. If you do want to place an ad, consider a classified on an Internet adoption site managed by a rescue organization like http://www.petfinder.com/.

Petfinder.com can help you find an animal shelter or rescue organization that can help you place your dogs. Also, if you have a purebred dog, visit the akc.org website to help put you in touch with your breed rescue group.

It is very possible that a shelter representative will set an appointment for you to bring your pet at a later date to a health and behavior evaluations. Testing is necessary to determine whether your dog is suitable for adoption. Generally, you animal will have to pass both tests to be admitted into the shelter. If your dog does not pass the tests, some shelter might offer you euthanasia as a humane alternative. But even if you dog is admitted, you still might have to wait patiently until a space is available for him.

As heartbreaking as it is to relinquish a pet, please take the time to find a proper and quality for your dog. It is worth the effort to ensure that he ends up in the best home possible with people who will love him for the rest of his life.

Pet Peeves

What I discourage most is running a quick errand with your dog unless you know that you can bring him or her into the store with you. It is bad manners to tie your dog up to a parking meter or other outdoor post for a number of reasons.
Besides deterring drivers from parking in certain spots, motorists will be afraid to approach your dog to put coin in the meter or will fear that your dog will jump up on their car and scratch it. Additionally, the presence of a dog in or near the portal of a store could also deter patrons and others from approaching the store. It is likewise dangerous to leave your dog tied up outside because he or she can be stolen.

I took these pictures last week. These Danes were tied-up outside Associated Market on Mulberry Street; the Rottweiler was tied up in front of an bar in which the bartender, his owner works-also on Mulberry Street; and the Weimaraner was tied up on Prince Street in front of the Prince Street Statin post office.

I discourage all readers to take their dogs on errands and leave him or her outside, unattended.

Twitter Recipe Challenge

I twitter and I cook. So of course, I was fascinated by the New York Times article about a woman in Northern Ireland who sends tweets about recipes. According to the author, Lawrence Downes, her work is an "awesome acts of compression. Ingredients, actions, quantities, times and temperatures — both Fahrenheit and Celsius — boiled down to utmost richness, density and clarity."

After studying her recipes, I concur. They were amazing. Part of the fun and challenge of Twitter is to make your point in 140 characters. So later in the day, when I went back to review the article, I also found a call to action by journalist Pete Wells. Mr. Wells challenged readers to take a long, involved recipe and condense it as much as possible. He then encouraged his challengers to share his share my passion for verbal compression, and post it on Twitter to include the characters #nytrc.

Well, I didn't take a long recipe but decided to share with you our Babbage Family Cheese Star Pet Treat Recipe.

Bo America's Commander In Leash, a children's book, will be released in April by Mascot Book, to chronicle the life of Bo Obama in the White House.

Bo's White House adventures include the time-honored traditions, including the Easter egg roll, Fourth of July fireworks on the National Mall, the pardoning of the Thanksgiving turkey, and all the festivities associated with holiday time at the White House. Also, the First Pup helps the Obama Family establish new traditions: playing on the new swing set, planting vegetables in the White House's new organic garden, and playing basketball with the President. The book includes special appearances by President Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama, Senator Ted Kennedy, and Vice President Joe Biden!

The publisher, Mr Aryal, told the New York Times that he and associate had been working on the project for about two months, leaving space for pictures of the dog. According to Aryal, Sasha and Malia are not named in the book because he wanted to protect their privacy. Sure!

Cooking for Pets

When Nick Chapman, PSCPA events coordinator, discussed the possibility of a cooking for pets class at the PSCPA, I jumped on the opportunity. Matthew and I love to cook for our dogs so we thought we would enjoy sharing our favorite-in actuality, some of our dogs' favorite recipes, on behalf of this great organization. We will be teaching a class at Foster's Urban Home, 124 N. 3rd St., Old City, Philadelphia, PA

Babbage Family Cheese Stars
2 cup wheat flour
1 cup grated cheddar cheese
1 tablespoon soft butter or margarine
1 teaspoon of garlic powder*
1/2 cup milk
1 star cookie cutter
1 baking sheet

Preheat oven to 200. Mix flour and cheese together. Add the softened butter. Slowly add milk till you form a stiff dough. (You may not need all of the milk.) Knead on floured board for a few minutes. Roll out to 1/4 inch thickness. Use cookie cutter and place stars on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake 350 degrees oven for 15 minutes. Let cool in oven with the door slightly open till cold and firm. Refrigerate to keep fresh. Makes about 3 dozen cookies.

*There is much debate about animals ingesting garlic. Animals should not eat raw a large amounts of raw garlic; it is very dangerous for them. But some cooked garlic will not hurt them, especially such a small amount.

Rhone's Favorite Low-Fat Oatmeal and Apple Muffins
2 3/4 cups water
1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce
1/4 teaspoon vanilla
4 cups oat flour
1 cup of oats oats
3/4 cup diced apple
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 egg, beaten slightly
4 tablespoons honey
1 package of mini-muffins cups
1 muffin mini-muffin tin

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix all wet ingredients thoroughly. Combine dry ingredients in separate bowl. Slowly fold wet mixture into dry. Spoon batter into muffin cups. Bake for 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into center comes out dry. Keep in a sealed container in refrigerator. Makes about 36 muffins.
Note: Due to the low-fat content, muffins do not brown.

All pet safety elements were designed by Japanese Takata Corporation. Takata is the third largest supplier of air-bag systems with a 50% market share in occupant safety systems including seat belts and children's safety seats. Bully For Mastiff Sperm

Family Court Judge Cheryl Matthews was looking for Ashton Kutcher, assuming that she was to be "Punk'd" when a divorced couple showed up in her courtroom Wednesday morning with this question -- who gets the dog sperm?

Karen and Anthony Scully were hobby breeders until their divorce in 2002. When they split up, they also split up their six bullmastiffs: he kept four of them and she took two with her to Florida. Karen Scully, who lives in Florida, and her ex-husband, Anthony Scully of Oakland County, are feuding in Oakland County Circuit Court, presided overt by Matthew, over who owns semen belonging their three, AKC-registered bullmastiffs. Furthermore, both continue to raise bullmastiffs.

Judge Matthews, an admitted dog lover, ruled that it was not a divorce matter and told the couple they would have to fight it out in civil court. The case has been assigned to Oakland County Circuit Judge Leo Bowman.

Dogs Heal

Unlike most folks, I never really sleep late. The responsibilities of animals always call so early in the morning. And yes, on Sunday morning too. Usually, when doing daily chores on Sunday, I treat myself to a listen of the telly but generally, I listen half-heartedly. But last Sunday, I was intrigued by a preview of a dog story on CBS so I didn't change the channel and I listened up. To my amazement, I even took a break from my Dyson. And just like Brooke Shields in the 80's...nothing comes between me and my Dyson.

In his report, CBS columnist discussed how getting a dog is the answer to not only the recession but works as a remedy to life's woes. Mr. Stein first got a dog when he moved to New York City because he was lonely. I didn't picture him as a Weimaraner or Short-Haired Pointer man but then, again most people never think of me as Jewish. Additionally, in his report, he mentioned adopting a dog from a shelter. Good Man

Yesterday, I found this picture up, near the masthead of the New York Times. (It has since been replaced by a picture Tiger Woods, an ad for the Masters.) The picture looks as if Neil is driving down the road with his companion pet, a Golden Doodle. Moreover, once you clicked on the picture, it beams you over to his new website for his new album, Fork in the Road. I didn't sample all the songs but it seems as if Neil is back. Well, at least back for me. The album is cool.

I first met Neil Young via mutual friend, Tim Drummond. It was in the time of the Shocking Pinks. He was younger; Hell, I was younger. The meeting happened after the concert. The friend with me said that I just glowed in his presence. Light emerged from my whole body. I said, "What do you expect? I was in love-with him. I also remember I really enjoyed drinking my long neck, Budweiser beer that night. The way I remember it, was that it was the coldest and yummiest beer that I have ever drank.

If you have a chance, thank him for me. I never had the chance to thank him for Rust Never Sleeps, one of my all time favorite album's.

Top 10 Cat-Friendly Cities

That's me with my Himalayan, Harrison. Many folks think of me as just a dog owner but I am also the proud owner of three cats. And that is why am interested in this recent information that I received from the American Veterinary Medical Association about the formation of the CATalyst Council, a coalition of the veterinary community, academia, nonprofits, industry and animal welfare organizations.

In March, the organization named Tampa, Phoenix, San Francisco, Portland (Ore.), Denver, Boston, Seattle, San Diego, Atlanta and Minneapolis as the Top 10 Cat-Friendly Cities in the United States.

What makes a cat-friendly city? The love and care cats receive, says the CATalyst Council. Moreover, the list was compiled after reviewing the top 25 standard metropolitan areas for such data as cat ownership per capita, level of veterinary care, microchipping and cat-friendly local ordinances.

Furthermore, the organization wants to recognize and celebrate that cats are popular pets. Although dogs have long been called man's best friend, recent data suggests that cats are the country's number one companion pet. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association's 2007 U.S. Pet Ownership & Demographics Sourcebook, the number of cats owned is 81.7 million and amount of dogs owned is 72 million; cat outnumber dogs by nearly 10 million amongst the pet-owning public. In additon to the rise of the cat population, the AVMA reported that cat visits to veterinarians decreased approximately 11% between 2001 and 2006. Lastly, a 2006 survey by the Society of Animal Welfare Administrators (SAWA) showed that animal shelters are seeing more cats given up than dogs.

As a cat owner, I must emphasize that it is extremely important for every pet, including cats, to see their veterinarian regularly. Ensuring your cat's health through regular veterinary visits is of utmost importance.

Art for Dog Sake

Last weekend, I went to St. Louis with other members of the Metropolitan Dog Club. The purpose of our trip was to visit the Museum of the Dog.

Located in the historic 1853 Jarville House in West St. Louis County, Missouri, The Dog Museum is affiliated with the American Kennel Club. Gift donations of art continue to make this unique museum's collection one of the largest in the country. Artists in the collection include Kirsme, Wardle, Bristow, Landseer, Trood, Earl, Rosseau and others including Bernard above.

To my mild amusement, I was happy to see Christine Merrill paintings of the George and Barbara Bush's Springer Spaniel, Millie, relaxing on the South Lawn and George and Laura's Scotties, Barney and Mrs. Beasely. I wonder if Merrill will be painting the Obama's new puppy or is she strictly a Republican painter.

Moreover, our lovely group of ladies was fortunate to have a private tour with the museum's first director, William Secord, the world authority on 19th century dog painting and collectibles. What was so fabulous about the tour with Bill, was that not only did he discuss the specifics of the paintings, but he could provide us with the scoop about the donor and the donation.

With side trips to visit the Arch and the Missouri Botanical Gardens, the oldest in the country at 150 years of age, the trip was worth dealing with our unbelievable travel agent, who will be for be forever know as "Oh Diane!"

A Bride to Better Times

Although I am not a regular of Access Hollywood, I was happy to watch the interview with Jennifer Hudson last night. Considering the recent tragedy in her life, I was happy to see her looking so beautiful. She was glowing but then, again she is a blushing bride.

For those of you who do not know, Jennifer Hudson is marrying David Otunga, a reality TV star with an Ivy League education. He is good looking and went to Columbia and Harvard. I am not going to ask why he appeared on I LOVE NY-2 but that's his business. And, I'm sure that his mother probably regrets that too.

In Hudson's interview, she mentioned that she wanted her dogs, Oscar, Grammy and Dreamgirl to be in her wedding. She even mentioned that she wants to send them down the aisle dressed in a tux or a beautiful dresses.

So here are a few tips for you Jennifer and other blushing brides who want to their dogs to take part in their special day.

1. If you are working with a wedding planner, discuss how you would like to incorporate your dogs into your wedding day at your initial consultation. I am sure she or he has heard this idea before.

2. At your wedding, your dog should be able to walk niceily down the aisle, sit and stay for pictures, not jump on guests and not bark thru the ceremony. For a refresher course in doggy wedding manners, browse the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (www.apdt.com), the International Association of Canine Professionals (www.dogpro.org) and the National Association of Dog Obedience Instructors (www.nadoil.org) to find a dog trainer near you.

3. To reduce the allergic reactions of your wedding party and guests to your dog, treat your pet with Allerpet to cleanse the hair of dander, saliva, and sebaceous glad secretions (www.allerpet.com).

5. For a list of dangerous plants and flowers, review the Humane Society of the Unites States website at www.hsus.org.

6. Hire a petsitter or doggy escort for the day who can watch that your dog doesn't get into trouble, eat from the table or commit any other faux paws. The sitter can even take your pooch to the kennel after the ceremony so you can start your honeymoon immediately after the party.

Meet the Breeds Comes to Town

The American Kennel Club and the Cat Fanciers' Association recently announced that on Saturday and Sunday, October 17th and 18th, 2009 at New York City's Javits Convention Center, they will showcase 160 AKC registered dog breeds and 41 CFA registered cat breeds as Meet the Breeds, a first stand-alone event of its kind in the world. The show is sponsored by PetPartners, Inc. a leading pet healthcare provider.

Since 2001, AKC Meet the Breeds has been held at the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship, drawing hundreds of spectators to the creatively decorated booths showcasing each AKC registered breed. The booths, created by national breed clubs, are decorated to depict the breed's country of origin, historical purpose or function, as well as to highlight that particular dog as a family pet.

This upcoming fall, responsible breeders and their dogs, puppies, cats and kittens will interact with the public to educate them about the various breeds and being a responsible pet owner. Additionally, various activities such as dog and cat grooming, Agility (dogs and cats), AKC Canine Good Citizen Testing, K-9 Search and Rescue and First Aid for dogs and cats will take place.

But of course, you can come and do more than watch and learn about the purebreds. For those seeking souvenirs or for those who love to shop, there will be a shopping area. Billed as just in time for the holiday season, you can shop until your heart's delight. Well, let's hope so, vendor space is priced at $2000.00 per booth.

Pet Writing Conference Wrap-Up

Next to the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, the hottest (pet) ticket in New York City this past February was the first Business of Pet Writing Conference, held at the Radisson Martinique. With an international mix of pet writers, veterinarians, dog fanciers, animal behaviorists and other pet industry professionals, the conference has been lauded as a success. So much so, the conference is returning to the Big Apple for an “encore performance” on Saturday, February 6, 2010.

I was thrilled with this first conference. The feedback I’ve been getting has been in superlatives like "brilliant", "fabulous", and "fulfilling". We have a lot of people to thank for their participation, both on the sponsorship and presenter sides. It couldn’t have been better. I’m expecting next year’s conference to be triple in size.”
